Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. The aunt she had was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to art literature and theatre. DuVernay instantly fell in love when she showed her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful instrument to engage in social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially aware and taught her to say something through art. DuVernay, who grew up with her family in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to sit at the house of a member of the jury and examine their junk. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency.
